Francoise Hardy(1967)

This album is a must-have for any fan of 60s French pop. Avoiding some of the disingenuous disposability of her earlier "yeh-yeh" era songs and the occasionally maudlin element of her later work, "Ma Jeunesse" is an impressively even album.

THE COLLAGE are an awesome but forgotten California vocal quartet. The band features two boys and two girls with a very cool, groovy sound, although it is soft and sweet at the same time. The whole record has a nice swirly, magical sound and some booming bass and harpsichord sounds. The sound can be compared to Spanky and our gang and the Mamas and Papas.

This is a definitely a highlight of the Canterbury sub-genre. Robert Wyatt decided to form a new band after Soft Machine started heading a direction closer to jazz. Wyatt still creates challenging and experimental music that is as enjoyable as Soft Machine releases. The band consists of Wyatt (ex-Soft Machine), Dave Sinclair (ex-Caravan), Phil Miller (future Hatfield and the North, National Health), and Bill MacCormick, who has played with various other musicians. They are all Canterbury super stars in their own right.

A pedestrian late-'60s California band, People hit the Top 20 in 1968 with a fluke cover of an old Zombies B-side, "I Love You." Aside from that single, their brand of psychedelic- and soul-influenced heavy rock made little impact. Group member Larry Norman eventually became a noted figure in contemporary Christian music.
